Choosing a University

The choice of a university for admission is one of the most
important and confusing decisions that a young person has
to make. You do not have the luxury to make a hasty
decision, as you might have to rue it in the future. But
you do not have to worry, as university guidance counselors
are there to make the best possible assessment for you.
These counselors are extremely experienced and a tremendous
resource to help you guide through making this tough
decision.
The first thing you should do while looking for a
university is try and understand yourself; ask yourself
some vital questions, which the university counselor will
ask you also. If you have a clear understanding of your
wants and goals then the university counselor can find a
university that matches to your responses. This will put
things in the right perspective and you may modify many of
your preconceived notions.
A university counselor is a must for making a studied
choice of a university. The reason being that you may not
be fully aware of the factors to be considered for making
this decision. Though geographical location of the
university is important, other factors like campus size,
its demographic status, study abroad programs, department
strengths, tuition and housing cost, class size, public vs.
private, financial aid availability, athletic programs,
alumni networks, Greek organizations, and housing options.
Hence talking to a university counselor is very important.
The first decision you'll need to make is your field of
study. Once you've decided on what area you will
major in, you will be quickly able to narrow down your
university choices. Probably the most important aspect
of college planning is finding a school that has an
excellent department for the major you choose.
Never limit yourself to one university either. Applying to
several universities is the best idea. Set a few different
pathways and be satisfied with whichever road fate
leads you. If you don't get into university A, you still
have an opportunity to attend at university B.
Don't lose heart if you don't get into the university of
your first choice. May be the second choice turns out to be
better. You can consult your counselor in making a
preference list of universities also.
Freshman students are confronted with the toughest decision
of their life that is deciding a field to major in. This is
no cause for worry as students and families could avail of
the professionals who advice on particular field of study.
Together with a university counselor, a student and his
or her family can find a particular field of interest and
locate a university that will support development in that
study.
