Choosing A Name For Your Baby
by Sally Anders-Forster
http://www.feibaby.com

When I was pregnant with my first baby, my husband and I
spent hours poring over baby name books to choose just
the right name. We wanted a name that was meaningful, one
that wouldn't give other kids a handle for jokes, a name
that was pretty and a little old-fashioned but not out of
date. I had my own criteria as well. Having grown up with
THE popular name of my generation, I didn't want my little
girl to be one of six Debbie~s in her first grade class.

After a lot of thought and discarded choices, we settled on
what we thought was the perfect name for our baby. Cara
reflected both his Irish and my Italian heritage - it means
friend in one language and dear in the other. It was
different, but not unusual. It was easy to spell and easy to
say. And best of all, in my eyes - it wasn't on anyone's
list of 10 most popular baby names.

My own criteria for choosing a baby name is a little bit
different - and a bit more practical. Since I'm going to
have to say that name literally millions of times over the
next 18 years, it's darn well going to be a name that I like
to say. That may be tongue-in-cheek (a little, anyway) but
there's a lot of truth to it. I've actually had neighbors
tell me that they love to listen to me call my children in
from play because it's like a song.

Choosing a name for your baby can be both a fun and
frustrating task. There's all this research out there that
suggests the wrong name can scar a child for life. It can
subject your baby to ridicule from classmates, affect the
way that people view him and even have an impact on the
grades that teachers put on his work. Just thinking of all
that can put you into a panic over choosing the wrong name.

There should only be one requirement for the name you pick
for your new baby: that you love it. Aside from that, there
are many ways that people choose names for their children.
If you're having trouble deciding, you can always try one
of these methods:

2. Pick a name of someone you admire, and make sure that you
share the reason for choosing that name with your baby as he
or she grows up. My husband's name is Albert - a name I
always considered 'unfortunate', until the day I declared
that no son of mine would be stuck with it. His passionate
explanation of the family tradition of his name convinced me
of the importance of giving a child a name of which you are
proud.

3. The same holds true when you choose a name for its
meaning. What little girl wouldn't be thrilled to know that
you picked her name because it means 'strong and graceful'
and that's just what she is?

3. Name the baby after someone you admire. In some cultures
it's traditional to name a child for a relative. Others
consider it bad luck to name a new baby after a living
relative. Giving a baby the name of someone you admire is
a way of wishing all those qualities you loved for your
new child.

4. Pick a name that's popular - or not. All those lists of
popular baby names can help you choose a name that will
help your child fit in - or avoid picking one that will
make her 'just another Ashley'. Either way, popular baby
name lists are a great source for finding names you may
not have considered.

I've had four children since Cara. There's a story attached
to each of their names, and each of them knows it and loves
to tell it. Every single one of them loves the name we
chose for them, and is proud to have it. And in the end,
isn't that the ultimate test of the name you choose for
your baby?
