The Canadian Basketball Connection
by Everett Gilbreth
http://www.rusbasketball.com
In 1861 a man named Dr. James Naismith was born.
Thirty years later he would be the man to invent the
game of basketball. Born in the town of Ramsay,
Ontario, Naismith and his friends play a game
called ~duck on a rock~. While this game sounds
nothing like the modern day game of basketball, it
would be the inspiration Naismith needed. The
game basically involved placing a ~duck~ on a rock
and then trying to knock it off using small rocks.
Naismith eventually left Ramsay for McGill
University in Montreal Quebec.
In 1891, after completing his attendance at McGill
University as Athletic Director, Naismith moved to
Springfield, Massachusetts where he worked at the
YMCA Training School. And this is where the
sport of basketball was invented. Naismith needed
to find a sport that could be played inside during the
harsh winters of Massachusetts so that the students
at the School of Christian Workers could have fun
and exercise. Naismith wanted to develop a game
of skill, rather than on strength, so that everyone
could participate. He also needed a game that could
be played in a relatively small space so he had a
great challenge to meet.
The very first variations of basketball were played
using a soccer ball instead of a basketball, and
wooden peach baskets as the goals. To go along
with the ball and the baskets, Naismith developed
some basic rules so that there would be no question
of how the game was played.
The rules that Naismith devised were very specific.
For instance one rule stated that a player could not
use his fist to hit the ball. Only one or two hands
could be used to throw the ball. Players were also
not allowed to run with the ball, and had to throw
the ball from a standing position.
Players were also not permitted to hold, trip, push,
or shoulder players on the opposite team. Naismith
devised a set of penalties for any fouls, such as two
fouls would result in getting kicked out of the game
until another goal was scored. These rules helped to
create a non-violent game that everyone could
enjoy.
Only one year later in 1982 and officials set of rules
were released that deviated only slightly from
Naismith~s original rules. The popularity of
basketball today can be seen in the many countries
that it is played in and the number of fans that are
passionate about the game.
