THE INCREASE IN COMPUTER ANIMATION TECHNOLOGY
by Grant Sullivan

When it comes to computer animation, three distinct
disciplines apply modeling, rendering, and motion control.
Prior to the mid-1980s, computer graphics focused
primarily on rendering but as the years have passed, the
world of animation has branched out to a number of areas
outside of film and television. Most people relate
computer animation to films such as The Mask, Alien, and
The Polar Express.

An entirely new technological application is forensic
computer animation which was used in the case of the '85
crash of Delta 191.

On its way to land at the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, the
plane was attempting a landing when it found itself
struggling in a powerful vortex. Just one mile from the
runway, the plane went down, killing all 137 passengers
onboard.

With more than $150 million dollars in lawsuits for
wrongful death and intensive property damage, the Federal
Aviation Administration and National Weather Service found
themselves in the midst of a serious battle. To help
determine the cause of the crash and create a map of
exactly what happened, computer animation was put to a new
test.

The problem was that to help jurors in the courtroom
understand the complexity of the crash, the government
needed a way to walk them visually through the flight and
the crash. The answer was a computer animation
presentation that for 45 minutes, explained each detail of
the crash as evidence. With this, computer animation for
forensic study was born. If you have an interest in
computers and forensic science, perhaps computer animation
would be the ideal career choice.
