FAQ for First Time Cruise Passengers

This month, thousands of people will board a cruise ship for
the very first time, and set sail for a vacation they'll
never forget. If you'll be one of them, or if you're still
deciding whether to join the fun, you probably have a lot of
questions about everything from how to pick the right cruise
to what you should bring on board. Here's a list of some of
the most commonly asked questions from first time cruise
passengers.
Absolutely! Cruise vacations offer such a variety of choices
in styles, ships, destinations and activities that it's
possible for you both to take the same cruise - and each
have exactly the vacation you want. If a cruise is on your
list of possible vacations, here's a handful of tips from
experienced cruisers to help you choose the right trip for
you.
Choose the Cruise That Suits You Best Choices, choices,
choices! Does vacation mean excitement in your mind? A sea
cruise on a luxury liner to an exotic destination is the
perfect choice. Large luxury liners are like self-contained
floating resorts. They offer sparkling entertainment day and
night, and a wide range of leisure choices to suit anyone's
idea of fun.
If what you're looking for is something cozier to promote
family togetherness, a short island hopping tour or a river
cruise may be exactly what you're looking for. River cruise
ships are smaller, with lots of activities planned for the
entire group. You'll be assigned a table that you eat at
each meal, make new friends and have plenty of time for
socializing and other activities.
River tours down one of the major rivers in Europe, Asia or
the United States can give you a comfortable home base while
you explore towns and cities along the way. On board ship,
you can relax by the pool, dine at the Captain's table,
enjoy dancing and entertainment and join in on ship board
activities.
A cruise on a luxury ocean liner is far different. You can
work out in the fitness spa, spend the day being pampered
and the nights dancing the night away in your choice of
several different dance and entertainment clubs. You can try
your luck at the roulette wheels, test your skills on a rock
climbing wall or relax around the pool all day long.
Your choice of cruise will make a difference in what you
pack as well. The handiest bit of advice for any cruise is
to pack lots of lightweight, casual clothing that you can
layer. There can be wide temperature variations out at sea,
and it's best to be able to easily add or remove layers for
warmth. Dressy clothes? On a river cruise you'll want to
pack at least one semi-formal, dressy dinner outfit. For an
ocean cruise, you'll want more than one. Dressing for dinner
is expected.
Do buy cruise insurance. It can cover the cost of your
cruise if unforseen circumstances cause you to cancel after
the latest cancellation date. It can also pay for things
emergency medical care in a foreign country, or the cost of
replacing items lost when your luggage goes awry.
Don't bring a lot of expensive camera equipment. DO bring
extra camera batteries and lots more film than you think
you'll use.
How will you get your souvenirs home? One experienced cruise
passenger always makes a point of tucking an empty oversize
roll or duffel bag into her suitcase. It's just the thing to
hold all the gifts and trinkets she brings home with her.
