How To Choose The Right Fitness Club For Your Needs
by Edaline Peebles

Getting fit and healthy is one of the best things that you
can do for yourself. If you've resolved to get more active
so that you can lose weight, or just feel better, joining a
fitness club can offer you all sorts of benefits. When you
choose the right fitness club, exercising will be something
you look forward to instead of a chore that you avoid.

With all the choices available, it can be difficult to pick
a fitness club that you'll enjoy enough to use often. Should
you sign up with the $29 a month club that just sent you an
invitation? What about the one you drive by on your way home
from work every day? While it's not a life and death
decision, choosing the right fitness club can be the
difference between a waste of money and a great addition to
your healthy lifestyle. Getting the answers to the list of
questions below can help you decide which fitness club is
the right one for you.

Is the fitness club's location convenient for you? There are
enough excuses not to go work out without adding 'It's too
far to drive today' to the list. Many people find that a gym
near the office is a great choice because it lets them fit
in workouts before or after work, or during lunch.

Are the facilities clean and well-maintained? Cleanliness,
especially around showers, pools, tubs and changing rooms
should be a major factor in your decision. Equipment should
be wiped down frequently, and checked for an mechanical
problems at least daily.

Will you feel out of place? No one wants to go work out
where they feel like a sore thumb. Time your check-it-out
visit to coincide with the times that you'll usually be
there. If your plan is some recreational fun, you may not be
comfortable with a gym that's more competition-focused.

Are you looking for a fitness club for your whole family?
The requirements in a fitness club for just you are
considerably different than those you'll want if you're
looking for a family membership. Is there a wide variety of
age appropriate activities? Is the staff comfortable and
trained to work with children of your kids' ages? Will a
family membership save you money? What kind of restrictions
are there on use of equipment for your children?

Is child care available when you need it? Ask what hours
child care is available if it's offered at all. Make sure
that there will be child care coverage when you can work
out.

Do they offer the activities that you want or need? The more
activities and options there are for recreation the more
likely it is that you'll get out there and use that
membership. Look especially for the healthiest options for
you. Having choices like low-impact aerobics or water
aerobics can make a big difference if you have arthritis or
joint problems, for instance.

Will you be able to use the things you want? Don't make a
choice based on one visit during your lunch hour if the only
time you'll be able to work out is after work. Stop in
during the hours that you'll usually use the equipment to
make sure that you'll be able to. If you have to wait an
hour to get on the treadmill, you may prefer a less crowded
club.

How much does it cost? Cost is obviously a consideration,
but it doesn't have to be a determining factor. If you've
found the perfect fitness club but the price is out of
reach, there may be financial aid available to help you out.
Check with your employer or health insurance company to see
if they make contributions to health club memberships - many
do. You may find help and discounts in unexpected places:
your auto club, a social organization or an envelope of
coupons in your mailbox. Keep your eyes open for good deals
- and then join up. If you've done a good job of choosing,
you'll find that it's worth the money.
