Finding a Family Bible
by Gene van Onstan
http://www.findbible.com
For generations, a family Bible was considered a staple of
most households; these Bibles were often handed down from
generation to generation. It was easy for newlyweds to
find a Bible for their family, either receive one as a
wedding gift or simply go down to the local store to buy
one.
Things are certainly different in this day and age. Whether
you visit a Christian bookstore or some other store that
sells books, you will most likely find a large selection of
Bibles. You will have to ask yourself a few questions, such
as, what are the differences, are the teachings the same in
each one, and finally, which one should you purchase?
Many of the modern day Bibles carry the inscription ~King
James Version~. In 1611, the original Hebrew and Greek
Bible manuscripts were translated into English biblical
scholars by with the assistance of King James. This was
the first widespread translation of the Bible into a
language that could be read by lay people.
That edition was so popular that it remains widely used
throughout Protestant churches around the world today.
However, although there have been other translations since
that time, several popular versions came into print during
the 20th century. From those have evolved several other
editions that can offer literally dozens of Bibles to
choose from.
The King James Version (KJV) can be a challenge to read
since it is written in 17th century English. You will find
passages such as, ~Abraham begot Isaac~ and ~Go to~,
meaning, ~here, now!~ We aren~t used to these terms,
however many editions have study notes to help both pastors
and members of the congregation understand the meanings.
There is a version that is somewhat easier to decipher, the
New King James version (NKJV). This uses some current day
expressions while still keeping the same general tone of
the original translation. The New International Version
(NIV) is another popular version is that is widely
available in many countries. This version is a little more
contemporary in its translation ~ the language is often
easier to read and interpret than the earlier James
versions.
An edition that is more comfortable for Americans when they
read the Bible is the New American Standard Version (NAS).
It is also fairly popular as it uses more American style
English than some of the others.
These modern day versions and others translations, like the
Good News Bible or The Word, closely follow the original
manuscripts and make an effort to maintain accuracy and
preserve the intended meaning, while using modern day
language. If you are confused, you can always consult with
your bookstore salesperson to help find the best Bible for
your use.
