Unique Inventions You Can~t Do Without
by Robert Gettig
http://www.ablinventions.com
There are many famous inventions that everyone
knows about, such as the telegraph that was
invented by Samuel Morse or the phonograph that
was invented by Thomas Edison. But what about
other inventions that make our lives more
convenient and enjoyable? There are many
inventions that we use each day without ever being
aware of their beginnings.
One the more obscure inventions that we use every
day are the mouse that is attached to the keyboard
of your computer. The computer mouse was
developed by a man named Douglas Engelbart in
1964. Engelbart was looking for way to
communicate with the GUI interface on computers
and the mouse was the perfect solution. The mouse
has gone through a few transformations through the
years but the general design is still the same.
Yet another invention that we rarely ever give any
thought to is the odometer, the instrument in your
vehicle that measures the distance driven. Although
the concept of the odometer was first touched on by
Vitruvius, the Roman engineer and architect, in 15
BC, the odometer that is used in our cars was
invented in 1854 by a man by the name of Samuel
McKeen.
Many inventions have been developed over that
years that are more fun that life altering. The Ferris
Wheel is a perfect example of this. George W.
Ferris, a famous bridge builder, invented the first
Ferris Wheel in 1893 when he was commissioned
by the World~s Fair being held in Chicago to
construct a structure.
If you~re looking for another fun amusement park
ride you need to look no further than the
rollercoaster. John Miller invented this fun ride in
1926, naming it the ~Flying Turns~. There are
many amusement parks all over the world that
feature the rollercoaster and the Ferris Wheel as big
ride attractions.
Medical inventions are some of the most important
inventions that we have since they have been
developed to help save lives. One example of this
is the cardiac pacemaker, which is used worldwide
for patients with heart problems. The pacemaker
was invented in 1941 by a man named John Hopps.
Through the years the pacemaker has had further
advancements and is used daily to allow heart
patients to live safely.
The heart-lung machine is another medical
invention that has been used for years in heart
surgery. This machine was invented in 1937 by
John Heysham Gibbon for the purpose of making
heart surgery safer and thereby giving patients a
better chance at survival.
Over the years we~ll continue to see many move
inventions that are scientific, medical, and just
convenient. If you think that you have an invention
that is of value make sure that you find out about
patenting laws so that you get the credit that you
deserve for your discovery.
