Houses and Their Architectural Styles
by Jordan Etheridge

Throughout the years houses have gone through
many transformations of styles and designs
depending on the location of the house and the era
in which it was built. There are some housing
styles that have stood strong over time and that are
still a model for the modern homes being built
today. Some of the popular house styles over the
years have included Cape Cod houses, Spanish-
Mediterranean houses, Greek Revival style homes,
the Tudor house, and French style houses.
A popular house style that was first seen in New
England during the later half of the seventeenth
century is the Cape Cod house. One of the reasons
that this home style was, and is still, so popular is
because of the flooring plan is symmetrical. As
well, the exterior of the home is pleasing to look at
with its wooden siding and a roof that is high and
gabled. After time chimneys were added to the
design of the house to keep the home warm when
the winters in New England were cold.
Another popular house style is the Spanish-
Mediterranean home. These houses are often seen
in the lower Southern states, such as California,
because of the warm weather. The Spanish-
Mediterranean house is easily recognizable because
of its red tiled roof that is usually long and flat. The
other distinctive feature is the exterior stucco, which
has the advantage of keeping the home cool during
the heat and warm on cold nights.
The Greek Revival style house is still very popular
due to the boldness of the front of the home. A
large porch will usually run the length of the front
of the house, with huge columns running to the roof
to create a feeling of austerity. The Greek Revival
house was a take off from the Greek homes in
Southern Europe and was first built in the United
States in the city of Philadelphia.
Great Britain is the original home of the Tudor
house that is still often seen in many upper class
neighborhoods with an Anglophile heritage. The
exterior of this house is very distinctive since it is
constructed of brick on the lower half and faux
wooden beams on the upper half. Another
distinctive feature is the large chimney that is
usually built at one, or both, ends of the house. The
inside of the house is very elegant, with gables on
the top floors.
French homes are designated by the simple, yet
poised, details that each home has. Some of the
details that you~ll find on these French style houses
include shutters, windows that are multi-paned, and
a fa~ade made of interlocking blocks. The interior
of the French style home is very traditional, with a
living area, dining room, and kitchen occupying the
first floor.
The style of homes will continue to change over
time and we~ll see slight adaptations made to the
above house styles, with the main basis always
remaining. Modern architects will create new
homes that reflect our own times but the time
honored home will always be here.
