Computer Technology For Everyday People
by Trey Aldrich
http://www.fcbpeople.com

If you are like most people out there you probably use a
computer on a regular basis, maybe even every day.
Just because you spend time in front of a computer does
not make you an information technology expert by any
means, but the issues surrounding computer security is
something that most people, especially regular
computer users, should be aware of.

In this day and age of the information superhighway,
~smart~ cards, and digital identification, privacy and
security in the online (and offline) worlds are becoming
a more and more important priority. If you have even
filled out a form online, given someone your email
address (or your phone number, or your home address
for that matter), or entered a contest put on by a local
business, your name is most likely floating around in a
database somewhere. You may not know who OWNS
this database, and you may not even have the legal right
to find out who owns it (or who they have sold it to).
This is why it is critical that you understand, at least at
a basic level how to improve the security and privacy of
your online experience.

For starters, everyone should at least have virus
protection and spy ware protection on their computer.
Viruses and spy ware are two of the major culprits in
the information theft ~industry~. Third parties around
the world use viruses and spy ware to get all forms of
information from computer users located everywhere
imaginable. Viruses and spy ware have the capacity to
steal your personal details information such as name,
phone number, street address, and more. Your financial
information can be compromised as well. Have you
ever used your credit card to make an online purchase?
If so, then your personal credit card information can be
stored in files on your computer that can be pillaged by
this malware and virus code. This is why it is crucial
for everyone to use virus protection and malware
protection at all times when on the internet.

Firewall protection is another safeguard that many fail to
consider. At the very least, firewalls should be used with
broadband connectivity and some security experts even
recommend it for dial-up.

Finally, the best antidote to viruses and spy ware is an
informed end user behavior. Don~t download software from
sources on the internet that you don~t recognize. Also,
NEVER open an email attachment from a stranger. Always
check attachments with a virus scanner, even those from
your friends, before you open them. Just because you use
security options, doesn~t mean that the people on your
email list do.

Most people can be comfortable with their online experience
as long as they are willing to exercise a little caution,
and a bit of patience, no matter what their skill level
with computers is.
