Dealing with Acne
by Beau Kowan

No one likes acne. Names like "crater face" and "pizza face"
have haunted more than just a few people. Yet acne is a
common problem.

Affecting more than 80% of people at some time in their
lives, acne most frequently strikes during the teenage years
but can affect people of all ages and continue throughout
adulthood. And while it is generally a facial problem, acne
can occur anywhere on the body. The shoulders, back, and
chest are also frequently affected.

Acne can sometimes be very painful and it can also leave
scars. The scarring is a common problem for many people.
When they finally get over the trauma of the acne, they may
be left not with beautiful and clear skin but with scars.

What Causes Acne?

What causes skin breakouts? Over the years many mistaken
ideas have caused a lot of misunderstanding. For example,
for years chocolate was thought to be a culprit. The truth
is that acne is more often caused by hormonal changes and
excess oil in the skin.

Androgens are hormones that aid in the production of the
oils necessary to keep skin soft and supple. But when too
much is produced, dirt can become trapped in the oil and
clog pores, becoming blackheads and pimples. Excess oil in
long hair that touches the face can also be a contributing
factor.

Your heredity plays a part, too, as does your personal
hygiene. While you can't do anything about your genes,
simply washing your face regularly can be a big help. Pay
special attention to removing makeup and to washing after
activities that cause a lot of sweating.

Treating and Preventing Acne

Today there are many treatment approaches, available in both
over-the-counter preparations and by prescription. If the
readily available ones aren't helping, see a doctor because
some of the newer treatements are proving wonderfully
effective.

There are also many natural remedies, some of which you can
create at home. Still, prevention is better than any
treatment, and while most people won't be able to avoid
breakouts 100% of the time, you can dramatically decrease
the occurrence.

You should also get your acne in control. If you have severe
acne that is not being helped by over the counter
treatments, then you should see your doctor for advice.
Cutting down on the number of outbreaks can also help you
prevent acne scarring.
