Cancer Facts
by Anna-Mae Bruit

There are many different types of cancer and many people are
diagnosed with it each year. But what exactly is cancer and
what resources are there out there to help? Cancer is when
cells in the body start to grow out of control. There are
many different types of cancer but they all begin with these
abnormal cells.

Cancer can occur in anyone of any age. It can occur anywhere
in the body since there are cells in every part of the body.
The cancerous cells develop because of damage to the DNA.
Cancer cells grow and multiply which is why some cancer can
grow and spread very quickly.

The portion of the body affected by cancer is usually called
a tumor, but not all tumors are cancerous. Benign tumors are
those that don~t spread to other parts of the body and
usually they are not dangerous.

Bone cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer -- they all act and
evolve in different ways. They also respond to different
drugs and treatments and they all affect your body in
different ways.

Cure for Cancer

There is currently no cure for cancer. Billions of dollars
are spent each year to try to find a cure and while it has
not happened yet, there are new treatments that come out
each year. When you are diagnosed with cancer, your first
thought is probably going to be how it can be treated. Your
doctor will discuss all of your options with you and help
you decide which is best for you.

Your treatment will vary according to what type of cancer
you have and how far along it has progressed. You might also
want to know the side effects of the treatment. Some of your
treatment options are surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and
immunotherapy. There are pros and cons of every treatment
and other health conditions may also affect it.

Your doctor will talk to you about what is available to you
and the possible side effects. For example, they may do
surgery to remove the cancerous cells. The downside is that
some cancer can be tricky and they may not get it all with
the surgery which could lead to possible future treatments.
Chemotherapy and radiation can also cause people to be very
sick.

If you have cancer, you and your doctor will have to decide
which treatment will be best for you in your situation.
