How to Clean and Keep Your Jewelry Looking
by Harland Gettig

If you want to keep your precious jewelry looking
great for years to come you~ll want learn how to
clean each piece safely and easily. Different types
of jewelry require different cleaning techniques
since they are each composed of their own elements
and compositions of metal. You~ll need to learn
how to maintain and clean your jewelry so that each
separate piece gets the care that it needs.

You probably own a piece of jewelry made of gold.
This metal can be easily damaged if the wrong type
of cleaning agent is used. For instance, certain
chemicals can ruin the gold, making it appear dull
and tarnished. The safest and easiest way to clean
gold is to use a simple solution you can make at
home. Simply use a gentle dish soap and some
water. Allow the gold jewelry to sit in the solution
for approximately 30 minutes. Then carefully and
gently scrub the gold using a soft toothbrush. Then
rinse and dry. Your gold jewelry will look as good
as new! To keep it looking it is best to avoid
wearing in the shower or chlorinated water such as
a swimming pool.

Silver jewelry needs to be cleaned by simply rinsing
it under warm water and carefully drying it. For
silver that is tarnished you~ll need to buy a solution
of ~silver cleaner~ that is specifically designed to
remove this tarnish. If your silver jewelry is more
than just a simple band you may need to buy a
special paste that you can rub into all the fissures.
When you use the silver cleaning paste make sure
that you use a soft cloth instead of any type of brush
so that you don~t make any scratches in the silver.
You should avoid wearing your silver jewelry in
swimming pools since the chlorine may cause the
silver to erode.

Pearls are another type of jewelry that must be
cleaned very carefully to avoid scratching the
surface. Rather than soaking the pearls in any
solution (this can weaken the string), simply clean
with a damp cloth that has been dipped in dish soap
and water. Be sure to put your pearls in once you
are ready to go out since perfume and hairspray can
discolor the pearls.

There are other types of jewelry, such as diamonds,
emeralds, rubies, and sapphires that each requires
gentle cleaning using a mild solution of dish soap
and water. The most important thing that you need
to remember is be gentle when you~re cleaning any
jewelry and that you avoid the use of abrasive
cleansers.

For those pieces of jewelry that are hard to clean, or
that are particularly tarnished, you may want to pay
a jeweler to do the cleaning for you so that you
avoid damaging the metal and gems. Jewelers will
charge you a small fee for cleaning rings, necklaces,
bracelets, earrings, and other pieces of jewelry.
